Russell Westbrook is one of the most prolific and dynamic players in the modern era. His supreme athleticism, acrobatic finishes around the rim, and high-flying dunks have made him one of the best draws in the NBA. A former league MVP, a member of the NBA 75th anniversary team, a nine-time all-NBA nominee, and a nine-time all-star, Russell Westbrook has truly cemented his name in NBA history as one of the best to ever do it.
In his college career playing for UCLA, Westbrook used defense as his calling card to make a name for himself. He used his strength and quickness to gain an advantage over the players he was guarding and gained a reputation as a ball-hound.
Once Westbrook reached the NBA, his game became more complete and he quickly became one of the best scorers in the league.
Russell Westbrook’s Career Points
After being drafted with the 4th overall pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Westbrook quickly made a name for himself as a scorer, averaging 15.9 points and 5.3 assists in his rookie season, making first-team all-rookie honors. Westbrook continued his onward trajectory as a scorer, consistently averaging over 20 points per game across several seasons. Paired alongside Kevin Durant, one of the best scorers in the NBA, Westbrook utilized his strengths and became a lethal scorer in the open court and racked up tons of points.
But Westbrook's true explosion as a scorer came once Kevin Durant left. We had already seen glimpses of this when Kevin Durant had to miss most of the 2014-15 season with a foot injury. Westbrook had to take on most of the scoring reins and he ended up winning the scoring title that season, 28.1 points per game. Once, Durant left the team in 2016, Westbrook was completely unleashed. He averaged a triple-double, a feat that had not been accomplished since Oscar Robertson, and led the league in scoring with 31.2 points per game. In the next two seasons, Westbrook saw his scoring dip a bit but remained one of the most active scorers in the league.
In his lone season at Houston, Westbrook averaged the third-best scoring season of his career, averaging 27.2 points alongside NBA scoring champ James Harden.
Although Westbrook is not the scorer he once was, he can still summon it up to drop numbers that will leave us in awe. Up until now, Russell Westbrook has a total of 24,533 points in his career, a truly astonishing feat.
