Mascots in sports are depictions of fictional characters representing a symbol or something related to the team. They usually carry the team's image and have a personality reflecting their beliefs. These mascots help in keeping the spectators involved and entertained. Some are usually mischievous around the court and are known for their fan engagement tactics.

One infamous mascot in the league is from the San Antonio Spurs — the Coyote, who is known for his comedy routines, fan interactions and his skits. The San Antonio Spurs unveiled the Coyote in 1983, to bring more energy and excitement to the team. He radiates enthusiasm and is popular for his innovative ideas and impromptu performances. The Spurs’ mascot has popping eyes and wears the team's jersey. He has made appearances on many television shows and morning shows and is the receiver of several awards.

The Coyote Real Name

According to NBAmascots.com, The Coyote is played by actor and stuntman Michael Costello. He has been Spurs’ official mascot since 2008 and is known for his signature dance moves, as well as his ability to interact with fans. The Coyote is full-time Spurs employee, and while his exact salary is unknown, it is estimated that he earns between $50,000 - $100,000 per annum.

Not only does the Coyote entertain and charge up the San Antonio Spurs arena, he also takes part in over 400 community appearances every year.

Tim Derk was the creator and the man behind the costume, who also performed as mascot for the first 21 years. Derk also came up with the idea of the T-Shirt cannon that is being used till date. In 2012, the Coyote broke the Guiness World Record for most under-the-leg dunks in a minute. He was also the very first mascot to be ejected from a game.

In 2014 and 2020, The Coyote was named Best Mascot of the Year by his fellow mascots and has been the symbol for the San Antonio Spurs since 1983.
