The San Antonio Spurs versus Dallas Mavericks duel opened the 2024-25 NBA season for both Texan franchises on Thursday. It was also the first duel of the campaign between European stars Victor Wembanyama and Luka Doncic.
Doncic finished two assists shy of his first triple-double of the season. He scored 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished eight assists while recording a steal and a block. Klay Thompson added 22 points with seven rebounds and three steals on his Mavericks debut. Kyrie Irving contributed 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
On the other end, Julian Champagnie and Jeremy Sochan scored 18 points apiece, while Victor Wembanyama and Harrison Barnes added 17 each. Chris Paul only scored three points but grabbed seven rebounds and dished eight assists in 29 minutes of action.
The Mavs came away with a relatively comfortable 120-109 win.

The game started with both teams exchanging buckets. Harrison Barnes led the way for the Spurs with 12 points in the first period (5-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc) to give his team a 22-20 lead.
The second quarter was a close one too, with both teams scoring 27 points. The Spurs entered halftime with a two-point lead.
The third quarter had 71 points and saw the Mavericks take the lead. They scored 40 to enter the final frame with a seven-point lead. Luka Doncic, Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving finished this period with 17, 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Mavericks managed their advantage in the fourth quarter, winning it 33-29 to secure the 120-109 win over the Spurs. Despite having four of their five starters scoring in double digits, the Spurs couldn't move past the defending Western Conference champions. The Mavs' Big Three had a remarkable official debut, combining for 65 of 120 points.
