Scottie Barnes was selected fourth overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2021 NBA Draft. As a key player for the Raptors, in his rookie season, his exceptional performance earned him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. He continued showing his progress and received his first NBA All-Star selection in 2024, replacing Julius Randle. During the 2023-24 season, Barnes has averaged 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game.

Barnes played one season of college basketball at Florida State University before entering the NBA Draft. His performance in college made him one of the top prospects in the 2021 draft class. His basketball career began at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he earned All-Area second-team honors as a freshman. Barnes then transferred to NSU University School before finishing his high school career at Montverde Academy. At Montverde, he played alongside Cade Cunningham and Day'Ron Sharpe. Barnes was rated as a five-star recruit and ranked fourth in the 2020 class by ESPN.

In 2018, Barnes continued his success with the USA U17 team at the FIBA U17 World Cup in Argentina. He averaged 9.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, helping the team secure another gold medal with a 7-0 record.

Barnes' most impressive international performance came at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup in Greece. He played all seven games, averaging 9.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 20.4 minutes per game while shooting 54.2% from the field. Though selected for the 2020 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team, Barnes couldn't participate due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In January 2024, he was named to the USA Men's National Team player pool.
