The NBA's rule of trades, drafts and free agency allows players to switch teams. This gives each team and player different dynamics of gameplay and environment to develop into a contender. Seth Curry, the younger brother of NBA superstar Stephen Curry, has carved out a solid career of his own in the basketball world. He also played through many teams in his 8-season career.
Known for his sharpshooting abilities and tenacious defense, Seth has played for several teams in the NBA. With every team, coach and season, Curry developed into a professional player. We will take a closer look at the past teams Seth Curry has been a part of.
Seth Curry’s past teams
Already having his father Dell Curry and older brother Steph Curry in the league, many would consider that Seth’s journey into the NBA would be smooth. On the contrary, he remained undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft and played in G-league with Santa Cruz Warriors.
Before stepping foot on an NBA court, Seth Curry made his mark on the college basketball scene with the Duke Blue Devils. In his senior year, Seth led the Blue Devils to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, leaving a lasting legacy in Durham. Similarly, at the Santa Cruz Warriors team in 2014, Seth Curry was named to the Futures All-Star roster for the 2014 NBA D-League All-Star Game.
He did have a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies but played in just one game, before returning to the G-league team. The struggle continued for Seth as he again played limited games for NBA teams – Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns on a 10-day contract and returned to Santa Cruz Warriors.
1. Sacramento Kings (2015-2016)
While his playing time was limited, Seth's ability to shoot from beyond the arc was evident during his time with the G-league team and 10-day contract games. He was rewarded with a 2-year contract with the Sacramento team. He played 44 games that season, averaging 6.8 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1 assist per game in 15 minutes of gameplay. During his time with the Kings, Curry made some crucial plays allowing his team to snatch important wins in the process.
Curry declined his $1 million player option for the 2016–17 season. This made him a restricted-free agent. But the move to Sacramento Kings provided him with his most substantial opportunity in the NBA up to that point. He shot an impressive 45% from three-point range. Seth's performances earned him recognition and the respect of teammates and opponents alike.
2. Dallas Mavericks (2016-2018)
Seth Curry's game in Sacramento helped him attract some of the big teams in the league and his breakout season came in 2016 when he joined the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs also offered him a 2-year contract, tying the guard till 2018. With increased playing time and responsibilities, he flourished in Dallas, showcasing his ability to score from all areas of the court.
During the 2016-2017 season, Seth averaged a career-best 12.8 points per game, shooting an impressive 42% from beyond the arc. He solidified himself as a legitimate threat and earned a reputation as one of the league's most dangerous shooters. Although he had some minor injuries during his 1st year in the Texas-based team, on October 7, 2017, Curry was ruled out indefinitely after being diagnosed with a stress reaction of his left tibia. A season-ending injury halted Curry’s progress in the Mavs franchise and was later released by them.
3. Portland Trail Blazers (2018-2019)
After a successful stint in Dallas, Seth Curry joined the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2019-2020 season. Signing yet another 2-year contract, Seth performed his best with the Western conference team. Playing alongside Damian Lillard, Seth provided the Trail Blazers with a reliable scoring option from the perimeter.
In his 1st season with the Blazers, Seth Curry averaged 12.4 points per game. Curry also played in the Conference finals with the Blazers but sadly got swept aside by Stephen Curry and the Warriors team. Activating his player option in the second year, allowing him to move to another franchise.
4. Dallas Mavericks (2019-2020)
Curry signed a 4-year deal with the franchise, his longest by that time. Returning to Dallas this time around was not as sweet as expected. Luka Doncic emerged as a star player for the team and the team also had a potent support cast limiting Curry’s court time. Still, he maintained his average of 12.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists for the Mavs.
5. Philadelphia 76ers (2020-2022)
Curry was traded to the Eastern Conference giants Philadelphia 76rs, joining forces with Tobias Harris and Joel Embiid. He played for 1 and a half seasons with the 76ers averaging 13.5 points, 3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
In his 1st postseason with the 76ers, Curry averaged career-high 19 pints, shooting above 50% from the range and 56% from the field. The sharpshooter was instrumental in the team’s progress in the 2021 playoffs.
In 2022, till the All-star break, Curry was having his best shooting days, averaging above 15 points, for the first time in his career. That made him an important piece in the franchise which was used as a trade chip to bring James Harden from the Brooklyn Nets.
6. Brooklyn Nets (2021-current)
Forwarding Dallas Mavs’ 4-year contract, Curry had guaranteed game time till 2023. He was traded to the Brooklyn Nets who were entering rebuilding mode. This allowed Steph some extra game time. Completing 1 and a half seasons with the Nets, Curry averaged 12.5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Seth Curry's journey through the NBA has been one of growth and development. From his college days at Duke to his various NBA teams, he has made significant contributions to each organization. He ranks second in NBA history in career 3-point field goal percentage just behind his brother Steph.
His shooting prowess and defensive tenacity have earned him the respect of teammates and opponents alike. As Seth continues to make an impact in the league, his past teams will always play a crucial role in shaping his career and establishing his reputation as a reliable and deadly shooter in the NBA.
