Major Injuries sustained by Stephen Curry in the NBA
Curry's major injuries during his NBA career, as of November 2024, are as follows:
Leg Injury (Feb 2023)
Curry sustained a left leg ligament injury during a game against the Dallas Mavericks on February 4, 2023. According to the NBA, he was diagnosed with a lower-leg contusion along with partial tears in his left leg's superior tibiofibular ligament and interosseous membrane.
Curry seemed to collide knees with McKinley Wright IV while defending a drive with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter, causing the injury. The star of the Warriors came up favoring his left leg after being penalized for a foul. He came back 11 games later, on March 5, 2023, against the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Basketball Reference.
Shoulder Injury (Dec 2022)
According to NBA, Curry hurt his left shoulder playing against the Indiana Pacers on December 14, 2022. About two minutes into the third quarter, as the Warriors attempted to overcome a 20-point deficit at the half, he sustained an injury. In the third quarter, he made a three-pointer with 4:16 remaining to pull Golden State within 83-80.
Curry, however, stuck out his left arm in an attempt to halt Pacers forward Jalen Smith as he dribbled toward the baseline. As Smith went on, Curry's arm bent backward. In the subsequent timeout, Curry walked to the locker room after grabbing his shoulder while crouching on the court. He missed 11 straight games as a result, making a comeback against the Phoenix Suns on January 1, 2023, according to Basketball Reference.
Hand Injury (Oct 2019)
Curry played a total of five games in the 2019-20 season due to a broken left hand on October 30, 2019, during a game against the Phoenix Suns. Sports Illustrated reported that midway through the third quarter, with his team trailing 83-54, Curry drove to the rim and collided with Suns center Aron Baynes. Baynes landed on top of him after he fell onto his hands, and he quickly grabbed his left wrist. Before exiting the game, Curry had nine points on 3-of-11 shooting, including 1-of-7 from three and four turnovers.
Left Groin Strain (Nov 2018)
After suffering a left groin strain during a game against the Milwaukee Bucks on November 8, Curry missed 11 games until returning on December 1 against the Detroit Pistons, as per Basketball Reference. According to the team, the medical personnel kept an eye on him while he was injured and during his recovery, as per the NBA.
Tweaked Right Ankle (Mar 2018)
Curry departed the game in the second half of the March 2, 2018, game following a crazy scoring spree against the Hawks after landing on teammate Zaza Pachulia's foot. According to early reports, Curry's injury wasn't serious enough to completely exclude him from the Warriors' next two-game road trip, according to USA Today.
However, the severity of his ankle injury grew after he blocked a layup against the San Antonio Spurs on March 8 and rolled it again. After missing 16 games, or the rest of the regular season, he even missed the six games of the 2018 playoffs, totaling 22 games. According to Basketball Reference, he made his comeback on January 5, 2018, against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Sprained Ankle (Dec 2017)
Curry sprained his ankle in a match against the New Orleans Pelicans, which the Golden State Warriors won on December 4, 2017. The mishap occurred after Curry attempted to stop E'Twaun Moore's momentum after missing his attempt to steal the ball. He instantly fell in pain as his right foot caught and turned awkwardly on the floor, as per the NBA.
Curry headed straight to the locker room for treatment after being substituted during the following play stoppage. He walked out of the locker room on crutches after the game. After X-rays came back negative, Warriors public relations informed reporters that Curry had been diagnosed with a sprained ankle. He missed 11 games, making a comeback on December 30 against the Memphis Grizzlies, according to Basketball Reference.
Ankle Injury (Mar 2012)
Curry only appeared in 26 games during the 2011–12 season, and NBC Sports reports that he had at least five ankle sprains and two ankle surgeries in between. He suffered the last of his ankle injuries that season against the Los Angeles Clippers on March 11, 2012, according to Basketball Reference. He returned the following season completely recovered, skipping this one entirely.
