Sports columnist Jason Whitlock knows a thing or two about controversial comments. Apparently, he's not above coming to the defense of fellow buzzworthy individuals.

This much was clear when Whitlock took to X so that he could back up comedian Andrew Schulz, whose joke about Black women was called out by Kendrick Lamar in his latest album. In the aftermath of the Lamar callout, Schulz found himself facing negative reactions online — including one from athlete-turned-podcaster Matt Barnes.

Whitlock wasn't happy with what Barnes had to say about Schulz.

"We now have 'drill' podcasting," Whitlock said of Barnes, who co-hosts "All the Smoke" podcast with Stephen Jackson. "This is Matt Barnes making veiled threats at comedian Andrew Schulz for cracking jokes about Kendrick Lamar."

Whitlock then took his criticism a step further: "Who are the people financing and empowering idiots like Matt Barnes? Barnes is the Suge (Half) White of podcasting."

Jason Whitlock and Matt Barnes: Two fearless men

For context, Whitlock's Tweet was likely alluding to drill rap — a genre that's associated with confrontational lyrics — and the battle rapper Suge White. This implies that Whitlock has no love lost for Barnes' scathing style of podcasting.

Though Whitlock was highly critical of Barnes in his Tweet, there's no denying that these two men have common ground: a blatant disregard for what anyone thinks.

Whitlock, for one, has a podcast that's literally titled "Fearless with Jason Whitlock." A journalist with over three decades worth of credentials, Whitlock has garnered a reputation for dishing out his insights in a no-frills, straightforward manner. Recently, he commented on how Caitlin Clark supposedly caved into the pressure of having to elevate Black players' status in the WNBA.

Barnes, of course, has embraced the role of outspoken podcaster since October 2019, when he and Jackson launched "All the Smoke." Just last month, the one-time NBA champion called out Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo for his "weird behavior" during a game against the Boston Celtics.

You'd think that these two men would perfectly understand each other, given the unique candor they bring to their respective careers. Apparently, Whitlock draws the line at "veiled threats." A response from Barnes is not out of the question — and when it does arrive, NBA fans can watch the sparks fly all across the internet.
