Born in Wau, South Sudan on February 25, 1997, Thon Maker moved to Australia when he was young. He was awarded Gatordae Virginia Player of the Year in 2014. His arrival to the NBA happened with the Milwaukee Bucks on October 30, 2016. He proved his mettle in the NBA by playing for different teams. He even played basketball in Israel and now is showing his basketball skills in China.

Thon Maker joined team Australia for the first time in a game against Japan during the FIBA World Cup qualifier on June 29, 2018. He is notable for being involved in the fight between team Australia and team Philippines during the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualification. In that game, he was punched behind his head by Terrence Bill Romeo from team Philippines. In return, Maker charged at the player and kicked him with his left leg, which did not connect. For these actions 13 players including Thon Maker were removed. He also received suspension for 3 games.
Thon Maker next played for team Australia at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. Here, he helped the Australian Boomers to win a gold medal.
