After winning both its league matches, the host men’s team from Thrissur is through to the quarterfinals of the 58^th Kerala Senior State Basketball Championship. Far tougher tests await them in the knockout stages as they will have to battle it out against teams from the “supreme league” i.e. the Pool A & B teams which are the top eight sides from last year.

In other developments, Kannur men topped Group D to confirm its berth in to the Quarter Finals, while in the women’s division, favourites Thiruvanthapuram and Ernakulum too progressed to the knockout stages, from Group B.

Men’s defending champion Ernakulam district had to withstand a tough challenge posed by Palakkad for four full quarters. This year, the Ernakulam side is weakened by the unavailability of star centre Eudrick Pareira who is out with a recurring leg injury. Also absent was veteran centre Subhash Shenoy, who, sources tell us, has stopped participating in State championships, and will focus instead only on playing for his Central Excise & Customs, Kochi side. In the absence of these two players, former international Mohnish Wilson and promising two guard Basil Philip (who was part of the Indian squad during the 2013 SABA qualifiers) stepped up to take their side to an opening win.
