Top 10 point guards in the NBA today

Russell Westbrook

Here are, in my opinion, the top 10 point guards in the NBA today:

Russell Westbrook

10. Ty Lawson

This year Lawson has really stood out from the rest. He’s averaging 18 points and close to 9 assists a game, and he is third in assists. If he plays like this in the future, he will definitely move up on this list.

9. Tony Parker

The French point guard has done extraordinary things for the Spurs. He’s a 6-time All Star, and a 3-time NBA champion. He’s averaging 17 points and 6 assists this year, and has always been considered one of the most underrated players in the league.

8. Kyle Lowry

This season, Kyle Lowry has been taking his game to a new level. It was a major surprise when he didn’t make the All Star game, and earlier in the season he was being considered as an MVP nominee. He’s averaging 16.8 points and 7.6 assists a game. He is one of the major reasons for Toronto’s success this year.

7. Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook is, as has been frequently claimed, the Robin to Kevin Durant‘s Batman. Westbrook has been injured often this season, but for the games he did play he’s averaging 21 points and 7 assists a game. He’s only 25 and already a 3 time NBA All Star.

6. Kyrie Irving

Irving is among the best at ball-handling in the league. He certainly demonstrated that with his ankle breaker against Brandon Knight during the Rising stars challenge. Kyrie is a 2-time All Star and being just 21, he definitely will be attending many more All Star games.

5. Damian Lillard

Lillard has been a very clutch shooter since entering the league, and he won Rookie of the Year in 2012. He became the first player in NBA history to participate in all 5 All Star weekend events. He’s averaging 21 points and 5.7 assists a game. He’s an incredibly clutch shooter and is the major reason for Portland’s success.

4. John Wall

Drafted first overall in 2010, Wall is one of the best players in the league right now; he is top 3 in assists despite playing for the below-par Wizards. He made his first All Star appearance this year, but expect many more to come.

3. Rajon Rondo

Rondo is one of the best passers in the game, and since returning from his injury he has still been getting many assists despite playing for a now mediocre Celtics team. He has lead the led the league in assists twice and is a 4 time All Star while still being just 27 years old. Rajon Rondo is a brilliant passer and is one of the very few “true point guards” who still remain in the league.

2. Stephen Curry

Since last year, Stephen Curry has emerged as the best 3-point shooter in the league. He’s averaging some ridiculous numbers – 24 points and 9 assists a game. He’s first in the league in assists, and made the first All Star game of his career this year. Many people believe this is the first of many All Star appearances for the Golden State point guard.

Chris Paul

Chris Paul

1. Chris Paul

Chris Paul has already demonstrated he’s the best point guard in the league since entering the league in 2005. He has been a 7-time All Star, and has lead the league in assists twice in his career thus far. He is without a doubt the best point guard in the league.

Currently the NBA is filled with several great point guards, and here is the list of good point guards who didn’t make the cut:

Derrick Rose

After returning from his injury he hasn’t quite been able to put up numbers like the old Derrick Rose did. Now that he’s out for the season with another injury, some are wondering whether he will EVER return to playing basketball.

Deron Williams

Ever since the Nets moved to Brooklyn, Deron Williams hasn’t really picked up his game. This year he’s averaging some horrible numbers. That said, many are hoping he will come back as the old Deron Williams who was used to fighting with Chris Paul for the title of the best point guard in the league.
