Point guards will once again have central roles for their teams in the 2024-25 NBA season. Teams with legitimate championship aspiration need a great point guard to challenge for the Larry O’Brien Trophy. In the 2023-24 finals, Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Jrue Holiday and Derrick White were some of the best players.
As teams look to dethrone the Boston Celtics as the champions next season, here are the point guards who could lead the charge.
Predicting the best point guards of the 2024-25 NBA season
#5 Tyrese Haliburton
Tyrese Haliburton hardly played during Team USA’s gold-medal run in the Paris Olympics. Part of the reason was because he was dealing with an injury. But a healthy Haliburton would have still found it tough to crack the rotation considering the Americans’ embarrassment of riches.

The Indiana Pacers or any team will not have that kind of collection of talent, making Haliburton invaluable. Behind the All-Star play of Haliburton, the Pacers reached the Eastern Conference finals last season. An injury and Boston’s superiority, however, were too much to overcome for Indiana.
Tyrese Haliburton’s Olympic experience, the pain of getting swept in the playoffs and constant criticism will only push him to get better. Not many point guards will be better than him in the 2024-25 NBA season.
#4 Jalen Brunson
A handful of analysts and some fans thought Jalen Brunson deserved a spot on Team USA more than Tyrese Haliburton. The New York Knicks point guard, however, fractured his hand in Game 7 of the playoffs against the Pacers.
A healthy Brunson, though, is expected to have a superb 2024-25 NBA campaign. The lefty guard dragged the Knicks deep in the playoffs despite guiding an injury-hampered roster. For what he has shown over the years, the franchise made him the team captain, an honor left vacant since the 2018-19 season.
All signs point to a superb 2024-25 NBA season for the Knicks’ newly-named team captain.
#3 Steph Curry
Steph Curry could be the best point guard in the 2024-25 NBA season if he stays healthy. He could also get that distinction if the vastly retooled Golden State Warriors give him enough support. If things go as the Warriors planned, he might rule this position when all is said and done.
After failing to lead the Dubs to the playoffs last season, Curry should be raring for redemption. The Olympics showed that he still has plenty left in the tank. He left the world impressed following his late-game heroics in the Americans’ gold-medal-winning campaign.
Steph Curry’s impact may somewhat hinge on the Warriors’ roster construction. Klay Thompson is gone and Curry may find Brandin Podziemski, Buddy Hield or De’Anthony Melton as his new backcourt partner.
It will take time for him to adjust to his new teammates and vice versa. Regardless of who he shares the floor with, the two-time MVP should still be one of the best point guards in the 2024-25 NBA season.
#2 Luka Doncic
Losing the 2024 NBA Finals should still sting Luka Doncic. Despite his efforts, the Dallas Mavericks were overwhelmed by the Boston Celtics. That alone should be enough to fire up the Slovenian for next season.
Doncic averaged 33.9 PPG last season, the best in the league, 9.8 APG and 9.2 APG. If he sniffs those numbers again, he might be the best playmaker/scorer combo in the 2024-25 NBA season.
If he is in shape, Luka Doncic could win the MVP award next season.
#1 Shai Gilgeous- Alexander
Many thought Shai Gilgeous-Alexander should have been last season’s MVP instead of Nikola Jokic. He was so good that a handful of analysts were convinced the league robbed him of the award. “SGA” could be even better next season after painful exits in the NBA playoffs and the Paris Olympics.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s impact could be even more highlighted when team roster is considered. The OKC Thunder are expected to challenge the Boston Celtics for the championship in the 2024-25 NBA season. With an improved roster, the Canadian could reach the top of the league and crown himself the best point guard next season.
