The Washington Wizards, originally established in Chicago in 1961 as the Chicago Packers, underwent several name changes before finding their home in Washington D.C. They were known as the Chicago Zephyrs in 1962, then the Baltimore Bullets in 1963, before rebranding as the Capital Bullets in 1973 and finally settling on the Washington Bullets in 1974.

The franchise adopted the name Washington Wizards in 1997. Throughout their history, the Wizards have enjoyed illustrious eras, boasting legendary players such as Elvin Hayes, Earl Monroe, and Wes Unseld in the late 1960s to 1980s. This was followed by Bernard King in the 1980s, Gilbert Arenas in the 2000s, and more recently, John Wall and Bradley Beal in the 2010s. Competing in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference, the team calls the Capital One Arena home and has cultivated a strong fanbase in the D.C. area.

Known for their offensive prowess, but often criticized for their defense, the Wizards have remained popular amongst fans, with their mascot G-Man being particularly beloved. Owned by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the franchise is focused on building a contending team around emerging talents like Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma in the coming seasons.

The Wizards won the NBA championship in 1978. With Wes Unsled, Elvin Hayes and Bob Dandridge leading the way, the Wizards (then Bullets), won the 1978 NBA Finals in hard-fought seven games against the Seattle SuperSonics, led by Dennis Johnson and Jack Sikma. Washington and Seattle rivalry continued in the 1979 Finals, but this time Seattle took their revenge to beat Washington in five games’ gentleman's sweep.
