Early Tuesday afternoon, NFL star J.J. Watt announced that this season is going to be his last. After being drafted 11th overall back in 2011, the defensive end is deciding to call it a career.
During his time in the NFL, J.J. Watt was named to five Pro Bowls and is a three-time Defensive Player of the Year. However, it is his other talents that are starting to shine following the news of his impending retirement.
While making his rise on the football field, Watt was also a star on the basketball court. He played during his time in high school and has quite an impressive highlight reel.

Before becoming a college football sensation, Watt played basketball for Pewaukee High School. He was a multi-sport athlete, also playing hockey and competing in shot put.
One of Watt's biggest games came against Eisenhower in 2007. They won the conference championship that year, but Watt played a role in handing them their only loss that season. The future NFL star dropped 25 points in an upset win.
Why is J.J. Watt retiring?
At 33-years-old, J.J. Watt might still have something left in the tank. However, he is deciding to end one of the biggest chapters of his life.
There could be multiple reasons for this decision, with health being one of the biggest. Aside from football-induced injuries, Watt had a bit of a scare regarding his heart. A few months back, he suffered an atrial fibrillation and needed his heart to be shocked into rhythm.
Another reason why some athletes retire early is due to family life. This could also play a part in the Arizona Cardinals defensive end calling it a career. After marrying his wife Kealia back in 2020, the couple recently gave birth to their first child. This past weekend marked J.J. Watt's final home game and his son's first NFL game.
2023 might be the end of the line for him, but the Watt name will still live on in professional football. At this moment in time, him and his two brothers are on NFL rosters. T.J. and Derek Watt are both members of the Pittsburgh Steelers. T.J. plays defense like his older brother, while Derek is a fullback.
After a long and successful career as a pro, J.J. Watt now feels content on walking away for good. From here, he will now get the chance to kick back and experience the joys of fatherhood for the first time.
