The game of basketball, though played on the hard court, is planned and strategized on the sidelines. An important figure on the sideline is of course the head coach, who architects the team’s progress during timeouts and breaks. While individuals who take the head coaching position have already gone through various coaching roles, the actual job is very hard. A new name in the head coaching fraternity is Wes Unseld Jr.

Although Unseld Jr. has been a very familiar personality on the sidelines, he had never been a head coach till 2021. Wes Unseld Jr. has carved out his own path in the sport as a coach. His father Wes Unseld Sr. was a Hall of Famer and an NBA champion.

He was later part of the Golden State Warriors and the Orlando Magic’s coaching staff, and also worked with the Denver Nuggets for six years. In Denver, Wes Unseld Jr. helped improve the team’s defence and worked closely in the development of superstars Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr.

His time with the Nuggets was marked by significant growth both for him as a coach and for the team's performance. His contribution to the Nuggets' success did not go unnoticed, as he was short-listed for the head coaching position of the Washington Wizards in 2021.

Washington Wizards (2021-present)

Hall of Famer Wes Unseld Sr. was the head coach of the team when his teenage son joined the franchise as a scout. After spending 15 seasons in the league, and working on different assignments in various franchises, Wes Unseld Jr. was appointed as head coach of the Wizards in 2021. He signed a four-year $28 million deal which runs through the 2024-25 season.

Unseld Jr. is known for player development and defensive strategies. While the team’s win percentages are not skyrocketing, he has already developed players like Bradley Beal and Kyle Kuzma into potential champions. Now with a new season about to start, Wes Unseld Jr. would be looking to improve on the results with the roster in hand.
