Watson was born on November 7, 2000, in Spokane, Washington. As a child, he acquired an obsession with basketball and practised it nonstop. He helped his team win the state championship as a senior and was chosen as Washington State's player of the year.
In 2019, Watson graduated from high school and signed a basketball contract with the Gonzaga Bulldogs. For four years, Watson represented Gonzaga Preparatory School in basketball on the varsity team in Spokane, Washington. He was named the Greater Spokane League's most valuable player (MVP) in his second season after averaging 19 points per game. At the Washington Class 4A state tournament, Watson coached his team to a third-place finish and a conference title. He won the Class 4A state championship as a junior while averaging 23 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists per game. He was also named the tournament's MVP. Watson was chosen for the first team of the USA Today All-USA Washington. His 21.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game averages during his senior year helped Gonzaga Prep capture the 4A state championship for the second time in a row. He was named the unanimous state tournament MVP and named Washington Mr. Basketball and the 4A Player of the Year by the Associated Press.
On June 21, 2017, Watson made a commitment to play collegiate basketball for Gonzaga before the start of his junior year. Additionally, he had communication with Washington, Idaho, and Washington State. Watson was regarded as a four-star prospect and the second-best player from Washington in the 2019 class.

Watson made his Gonzaga debut on November 5, 2019, scoring seven points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out four assists in a victory over Alabama State. On November 12, he scored 15 points in a victory over North Dakota. With Killian Tillie recovered from knee surgery, Watson started four games. It was revealed on January 16, 2020, that Watson will have shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the campaign. In 15 games, he had a 4.9-point and 3.1 rebound average.
