American college basketball player Markquis Morris Nowell, a Kansas State Wildcats of the Big 12 Conference member, was born on December 25, 1999. He once represented the Little Rock Trojans. With 19 assists against Michigan State in the 2023 Sweet Sixteen, he holds the Division I NCAA Championship single-game assist record.

Under the direction of Hall of Fame Coach Bob Hurley Sr., Nowell started his high school career at St. Anthony High School in New Jersey. In order to play with Julian and Justin Champagnie at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School during his sophomore and junior years, he transferred schools after obtaining little playing time following his freshman year. As a junior, Marquis averaged 8.1 assists and 19.9 points per game. He switched to The Patrick School for his final year and, despite missing a month due to injury, scored 10.9 points per game. Before Little Rock took a look at him after high school, he had had no Division 1 offer.

Nowell had 11.1 points, 4.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals a game as a rookie. As a sophomore, he scored 17.2 points, handed out 4.9 assists, and grabbed 3.0 rebounds a game. First Team All-Sun Belt honours were bestowed to Nowell. Due to disciplinary issues, he was suspended for two matches in January 2020. Nowell scored 14.3 points, 6.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game as a junior before choosing to forego the 2020 season. He headed to Kansas State after the season.
In the 2021–22 season, Nowell averaged 12.4 points, with club triumphs of 5.0 assists and 2.2 steals per game. When Bruce Weber was replaced as the head coach by Jerome Tang, he was one of two players that returned to Kansas State. On January 10, 2023, Nowell Oscar Young received the national Player of the Week award from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for his career-high 36 points, nine assists, and three steals in a 116-103 victory over Texas. He was chosen for the First Team All-Big 12 and All-Defensive teams. Nowell defeated Montana State 77-65 in the first round of the NCAA tournament while tallying a then-career-high 14 assists. On March 19, Nowell defeated the Kentucky Wildcats in the second round with a total of 27 points and 9 assists. Nowell set a new NCAA Tournament record for the most assists in a single game on March 23 against Michigan State in the Sweet 16 while playing with an injured ankle. He also finished with 20 points, 5 steals, and 19 assists in the victory that went into overtime. On March 25, Nowell defeated Florida Atlantic in the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 with a score of 30 points and 12 assists.
