What are Kendrick Nunn's contract details with the Washington Wizards? All you need to know

Los Angeles Lakers v Toronto Raptors
Newly acquired Washington Wizards guard Kendrick Nunn

Kendrick Nunn was acquired by the Washington Wizards on Monday as they sent forward Rui Hachimura to the LA Lakers for Nunn and three second-round picks.

Nunn is in the final year of a two-year, $10.3 million deal that he signed with the Lakers prior to the 2021-2022 season. He is due $5.2 million this season, and the Wizards will be on the hook for the remainder of the salary.

The point guard did not suit up last season as he dealt with a knee injury, however, he picked up his player option for this season. Unfortunately, things did not go well for Nunn as he struggled to crack the rotation all season. He didn't receive much playing time.

Through 39 games played, Nunn has averaged just 6.7 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.3 steals and 0.1 blocks per game in 13.5 minutes per game. Even more troubling was his decline in shooting the ball as he shot just 40.6% from the field, 32.5% from 3-point range and 81.0% from the free-throw line.

Washington will likely hope that Nunn can bounce back to the player he was with the Miami Heat in his first two seasons in the league. Over that stretch, Nunn averaged 15.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.2 blocks per game while shooting 45.8% from the field, 36.4% from 3-point range and 88.1% from the free-throw line.

Why did the LA Lakers decide to move Kendrick Nunn?

While the LA Lakers had high expectations for Kendrick Nunn, he failed to reach them after battling injuries and inconsistencies over his tenure with the franchise. More importantly, however, the Lakers likely saw an opportunity to use their depth in the point guard position to upgrade the wing position, where they lack talent and size.

Acquiring Rui Hachimura, who was the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and is just 24 years old, is a buy-low move that can help the Lakers tremendously. Hachimura has shown flashes of upside and the Lakers reportedly plan to start him alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

While Kendrick Nunn may revert back to the player that he was in Miami, the Lakers already have three point guards receiving at least 26.4 minutes per game. In addition, LeBron has the ball in his hands as much as any of the point guards. With Nunn's role decreasing due to his poor performance, acquiring a player that is expected to start made a lot of sense for LA's front office.
