With March Madness in full swing and top teams competing for a national championship, the coaching carousel has begun for the programs whose seasons have concluded.

The likes of Rick Pitino, Tobin Anderson, and Ed Cooley have already changed schools in the offseason, and former Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry is the newest coach to officially announce his new job.

Notre Dame has hired Shrewsberry, who spent just two seasons at Penn State. According to Stadium reporter Jeff Goodman, the contract is for seven years and is worth north of $4 million per year, Shrewsberry reportedly had a big-time offer to remain at Penn State but passed it up to join the more notable basketball program.

Is Notre Dame right for Micah Shrewsberry?

Shrewberry's rise has been rapid. culminating with the Notre Dame opportunity for now. The 46-year-old began his coaching career as an assistant at Wabash and DePauw, each of which are Division III programs in Indiana. He got his first head coaching opportunity in 2005 when he took over Indiana University South Bend.

He then got some more notable assistant coaching opportunities and bounced around among Purdue, Butler, and the Boston Celtics for the next 12 years. The opportunity at Penn State was his first big-time head coaching opportunity, which he accepted ahead of the 2021-22 season.

In two seasons at Penn State, he led the Nittany Lions to a 37-31 record. They made it to the NCAA Tournament this year for the first time since 2010-11.

Penn State became one of the most well-liked teams in the country and secured a first-round upset by taking down 7-seeded Texas A&M 76-59. Unfortunately, they were knocked out in the round of 32 after suffering a hard-fought 71-66 loss to second-seeded Texas.

This strong coaching performance was enough to open the door for Shrewberry to receive a bigger college offer. He will be returning to his home state of Indiana, where he grew up and attended college.

Shrewsberry will work to restore the reputation of the Notre Dame basketball program after it has gone through a tough stretch. In the program's history, they have made the NCAA Tournament 47 times. However, they have not made the cut in five of the last six seasons and have not gone past the second round since 2015-16.

While he was one of the more unproven coaches out of the available options, Shrewberry will have the opportunity to shape Notre Dame in the way he desires and make it his long-term coaching home.

More college coaching news is soon to come, but with Shrewsberry occupying the Notre Dame position, one of the best opportunities is now off the board.
