No. 4 seed UConn takes on No. 5 seed Miami in one national semifinal. No. 5 seed San Diego State battles No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic in the other national semifinal.
The semifinal games commence on Saturday.
UConn is seeking its fifth national championship. This is the sixth Final Four appearance for the Huskies. If UConn wins the title, it would be its third since 2011.
Meanwhile, Miami, FAU and San Diego State have not made a Final Four previously. All three are seeking a first national championship in men’s basketball.
FAU has never won a national championship in any sport. The closest the Owls came was a 2002 College World Series appearance by its baseball team.
San Diego State has appeared in the NCAA postseason tournament in 16 different varsity sports. It won a single Division I national championship in men’s volleyball in 1973.
Miami is a more accomplished athletic department, especially known for its football team. The school has won 10 national championships. Five came in football, four in baseball and one in women’s golf. Miami’s last national titles came in 2001, when football and baseball lifted the trophy.
If UConn wins the national title, it will tie Duke and Indiana with five championships in men’s basketball. Only UCLA (11), Kentucky (eight), and North Carolina (six) have more. Kansas also has four national championships.
Last season, Kansas beat North Carolina in the national championship game. Baylor beat Gonzaga in the 2021 national title game.
If UConn wins, it will be the first national title for the Big East since Villanova in 2018. If Miami wins, it will be the first championship for the Atlantic Coast Conference since Virginia in 2019.
San Diego State would be the first national champion for the Mountain West Conference, while FAU would give Conference USA its first title.
