Time and time again, Steph Curry has proven that he shows up for big games. But there was one instance when he simply couldn't do so.
The reason: He was grounded by his mother.
Sonya Curry tells this story in this Nov. 23, 2018, clip from the "TODAY" show's "Through Mom's Eyes":

In their discussion of the Curry children's formative years, the "TODAY" show's Sheinelle Jones brought up a certain middle school episode.
"Tell me if this is true," said Jones. "Steph had a big middle school game...his first middle school basketball game. He didn't do his chores the night before? And he didn't get to play that first game?"
Sonya nodded, a knowing smile emerging on her face.
"That is absolutely true."
Sonya explained her thought process behind the big decision:
"We only work as a family if everybody does their part. It's not my job to do everything for everybody."

Though her three children (Stephen, Seth and Sydel) are all grown up now, Sonya still has her eyes and ears peeled on what they're doing in their professional careers.
Case in point: On May 20, 2018, in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals, Steph Curry dropped 18 third-quarter points. Amid his hot streak, Curry was caught on camera saying,
"This is my f***ing house!"
The Warriors' 126-85 win over the Houston Rockets was supposed to put Curry in a festive mood. Instead, he was humbled soon after by his mother, who didn't like his expletive-laden reaction in the third quarter.
"She was telling me how I need to wash my mouth out, saying to wash it out with soap," Curry told ESPN's Chris Haynes after the win over Houston. "It's a message I've heard before."

Aside from being a supportive mother, Sonya Curry has embraced another role: grandmother.
Sydel Curry-Lee, the youngest sibling of Steph, shared an Instagram story on Nov. 30 in which she talked about the "role" of her mother in her third pregnancy.
"lol she's always wanted me to have a third and I was adamant on no no no. But you know what they say about a praying grandmother."
As Sonya Curry's grandchildren continue to grow in number, her kids know what to expect as far as values formation goes: an emphasis on being disciplined and prioritizing family.
