France and Germany's road to the Paris Olympics Men's Basketball Semifinals
France made it to the knockouts with a 2-1 result in the group stage. Its only loss came against the Germans on Saturday. However, it wasn't an easy route for the hosts. It faced stiff competition from Brazil and Japan in the group stage games and Canada in the quarterfinals.
The team beat Brazil 78-66 in a low-scoring affair, in which it trailed by eight points entering the second quarter. France didn't have it easy in the fourth quarter, with Brazil making it difficult to put the game away.
The second game against Japan nearly saw France record a shocking upset if not for a stellar display from Victor Wembanyama in overtime. The 2023 NBA No. 1 pick dropped 18 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals and blocks apiece in the 94-90 OT win.
France lost in a blowout to Germany on Saturday after trailing by 21 points at halftime. Its streaky offense had no answers for the World Champions, who were as clinical as it has been in this Olympics run.
Meanwhile, Germany breezed past their opponents with a 4-0 run, winning by a 13-point margin or better in every game. They opened the Paris Olympics with a 97-77 blowout over Japan, followed by an 86-73 win over Brazil before closing the group stage with a statement win over France, certifying status as the second-best team behind the USA.
Germany survived a scare in the quarterfinals against Giannis Antetokounmpo's Greece, winning that battle 76-63 after an excellent second half. It was a neck-and-neck contest until 2.5 quarters.
However, Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner took over the game while receiving perfect support from their supporting cast to seal a semifinal berth.
