After quarterfinal losses to France and Team USA, respectively, Germany and Serbia will square off for the men's basketball bronze medal on Saturday. Dennis Schroder and Co. could not repeat their preliminary stage win against the French, losing a close 73-69 decision. Deutschland desperately tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but Les Bleus did just enough to hold on.
Meanwhile, the Serbs suffered a devastating loss to Team USA in the other quarter-final showdown. Nikola Jokic led his team to an early 17-point lead, including 13 leading into the fourth quarter before the Americans sprinted to the finish line. “The Eagles” have to forget that heartbreaking 95-91 loss to have a chance of winning the bronze.

Germany vs Serbia: Preview
Germany looked like it still had France figured out in the quarter-finals when it led 25-18 after the first 10 minutes. Had they been more efficient with their shots, they would have carried a bigger advantage before the second quarter started.
Disaster struck in the second quarter as they hardly resembled the team that gave the French all sorts of trouble in the Olympics. They couldn’t score and the host showed more intensity, hustle and grit. The game turned in Les Bleus’ favor when it became a physical and grind-out game.
Dennis Schroder, Franz Wagner and their teammates can’t afford to get complacent for one minute, let alone a quarter against the Serbia. Die Mannschaft had trouble dealing with the bruising French duo of Guerschon Yabusele and Mathias Lessort. Waiting for them on Saturday is three-time and reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.
Germany has to come up with a better performance than the one they showed against France to have a shot at winning the bronze.
Meanwhile, Serbia has to be seething in the loss to Team USA. Svetislav Pesic lambasted the officiating after the loss. He pointed out that Nikola Jokic attempted only four free throws despite the Americans’ rugged defense, particularly in the fourth quarter. The defeat had to sting, so it is crucial they move on from it, or they could come up short again on Saturday.
Revenge has to be in the mind of Serbia versus the Gordon Herbert-coached team. The Serbs lost to the same opponents in the gold medal game of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. They will not get gold with a win in the Olympics, but they get some payback along with a bronze if they succeed.
