The FIBA World Cup couldn’t come at a better time for NBA fans. With the NBA season just ending and the offseason coming to a halt after a few exciting days at the start of July, fans of the league are left counting the number of days until the next season starts. However, this time around, the FIBA World Cup is set to happen from August 25th to September 10th treating fans to non-stop high-flying and jaw-dropping basketball played at the highest level with the highest stakes: the World Cup. 32 teams will be competing in a series of group stage and knockout games to determine the ultimate champion. For the first time, the FIBA World Cup will have three host nations: Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Let’s take a look at the venues at which the World Cup will be taking place.
Venues of the World Cup
The tournament will be hosted in five separate venues in three different countries and five different cities. Four preliminary-round groups, two second-round groups and the final stage from the quarterfinal onwards will be hosted in three different cities in the Greater Manila Area in the Philippines. Okinawa and Jakarta will each host two preliminary-round groups and one second-round group. The Philippines will host 16 teams while Japan and Indonesia host 8 teams each. Venues in the Philippines
In the Philippines, there will be three arenas in which the games will be conducted. The Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, and, the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan. All these venues hosted various 2019 and 2023 FIBA Qualifiers for the Philippines. The Araneta Coliseum, which has a seating capacity of over 55,000, is expected to host the final phase of the tournament including the final.
Venues in Japan
Japan will have one arena which will host the FIBA World Cup games. The Okinawa Arena in Okinawa is the chosen arena for this purpose. It is the home of the Ryukyu Golden Kings of the Japanese B.League and has hosted many qualifiers for Japan for the 2019 and 2023 FIBA World Cup. The Okinawa Arena has a capacity of around 10,000 people.
Venues in Indonesia
The Indonesia Arena in Jakarta has been chosen to host the games that will be happening in Indonesia for the 2023 FIBA World Cup. The venue is located at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex and will have a capacity of 16,500 people.
