Smith began his high school basketball career at Belleville High School-East before moving to Belleville High School-West for his final year. Malachi averaged a decent 15.5 points per game at Belleville West. It may not be the biggest scoring average but without question, he knew how to put the ball on the floor. This ultimately helped Belleville West win its first ever Class 4A state championship. Smith chose Wright State over Lindenwood, Montana State, and Denver as his collegiate basketball destination in November 2017.
