After an 11th consecutive loss, Green Bay finally pulled the trigger and let Head Coach Will Ryan go after posting a 15-61 record in two and a half seasons. As Green Bay sits at 2-19 overall this season, and a 1-9 record in the Horizon League, there is no better time than the present to reset.
Before Ryan was hired at Green Bay, he was coaching at Division II Wheeling University in West Virginia. He has been involved in basketball his whole life, starting as the video coordinator director of basketball operations for five seasons. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Ohio State and North Dakota State.
The Phoenix suffered a home loss to Robert Morris 72-38 on Saturday and that set off alarms. A very different coaching tenure than former Coach Linc Darner, who posted a 92-80 record over five seasons with the Phoenix.
The UW-Green Bay Director of Athletics Josh Moon had this to say about the coaching change:
"I want to sincerely thank Will Ryan and his family for their contributions to the men's basketball program these past three seasons, We wish him all the best in his future endeavors. UW-Green Bay is committed to continuing its legacy as an outstanding Division I athletics program in the future."
He added:
"Phoenix men's basketball needs to help lead the way as we work to elevate all of our programs and be a shining light for this region and beyond."
Rich history is possessed, and although they have not been heard from lately, they have had an impact on college basketball. Over 920 wins, five NCAA Division I Tournament appearances, and four conference championships.
The Phoenix has had six All-Americans, accumulating 22, 20+ win seasons. You would understand their displeasure with such a lackluster tenure from head coach Will Ryan.
Where does the Phoenix go from here? That's an amazing question as they are ready to reset and start fresh. But where does that start? Maybe around forward Cade Meyer.
Meyer is averaging 11 points, four rebounds, and almost a block a game. He has shown throughout the season to be a reliable piece for the Phoenix. The Monroe, Wisconsin native has to step up for the Phoenix to finish on a strong note. He possesses the talent to do so.
The forward from Orland Clarence Cummings is another player who has to step up as this team goes through an identity change. Cummings is averaging ten points, three rebounds, one assists, and almost one steal a game. If he can find a way to help even more defensively, it could bid well for this team.
