Syracuse announced on Wednesday that longtime coach Jim Boeheim won't be returning to the team next season. Boeheim coached the Orange for 47 seasons, but was with the university for a whopping 57 years.
Boeheim had a record of 1,015-441 at Syracuse, which is just second behind Duke's Mike Krzyzewski for the most wins in NCAA Division I history. He could have had 1,116 wins, but the school's scandal removed 101 victories from his record.
Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud released a statement praising Boeheim's career and contribution to the university. The Orange's new coach will be former player and longtime assistant coach Adrian Autry.
"There is no doubt in my mind that without Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Basketball would not be the powerhouse program it is today," Syverud said. "Jim has invested and dedicated the majority of his life to building this program, cultivating generations of student-athletes and representing his alma mater with pride and distinction.
"I extend my deep appreciation and gratitude to an alumnus who epitomizes what it means to be 'Forever Orange.'"
Despite Syracuse's announcement and Jim Boeheim's hints about his future earlier this week, there has been some confusion on what really happened. Some reports are saying that Boeheim is retiring, while others are reporting that he stepped down.
With Duke's Mike Krzyzewski retiring last season, UNC's Roy Williams retiring two years ago and Notre Dame's Mike Brey leaving the program after this season, it seems like a new generation of the Atlantic Coast Conference is on the horizon.
Boeheim's voice was curiously absent from the school's announcement of the changeover. In contrast, Krzyzewski had a yearlong farewell tour that culminated with a Final Four run last season, with Williams presiding over a news conference in April 2021 to announce his retirement and Brey announcing his decision in January.
After Syracuse fell 77-74 to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, Boeheim provided cryptic answers but did not definitively declare his status. Then, hours later, the school released its announcement.
Accordingly, fans on social media started to decipher the situation in Syracuse. Some argued that Boeheim was forced to retire, as the university wanted to move on, while others believe that he was fired.
Jim Boeheim's career in retrospect
Jim Boeheim played college basketball for Syracuse from 1962 to 1966. He played professionally for a brief time before getting hired as an assistant coach in 1969. He was promoted as coach in 1976 and was in that position until 2023.
Boeheim won one NCAA championship in 2003, a team led by Carmelo Anthony. The 78-year-old coach helped Syracuse to five Final Four appearances, 10 Big East regular-season titles and five Big East Tournament championships. He was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Apart from coaching Syracuse, Boeheim also served as an assistant coach for Team USA. He won three Olympic gold medals and two World Cup championships.
