Guillermo Gustavo “Willy” Hernangomez Geuer is a basketball player from Spain. He has been recruited by FC Barcelona Basquet in Liga ACB and the EuroLeague.

Born in Madrid, Spain on May 27, 1994, Willy Hernangomez is the older brother of basketball player Juancho Hernangomez. He has played basketball in Spain and the United States throughout his career so far. He won the Liga ACB 2-times in 2013 and 2016. He was also the 2022 EuroBasket MVP. He is currently one of the in-demand basketball players in Spain and Europe along with his younger brother Juancho Hernangomez. He has managed to impress the fans with his skills.

Team Spain is depending on Willy Hernangomez to bring his magic on the court during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Real Madrid Baloncesto

When Willy Hernangomez joined Real Madrid, he was considered to be one of the best players on the team. He also made his professional career debut with his team. He used to play on the reserve team. The team managers were impressed with his basketball skills. He also played for Real Madrid with the senior team in the Liga ACB.

Real Betis Baloncesto, S.A.D.

Willy Hernangomez played for this team for a year in 2013, when he was loaned to them by Real Madrid. Here also, he impressed the team managers with his basketball performances.

New York Knicks

This is where Willy Hernangomez’s NBA journey started. He stayed in the team from 2016-2018. During this time, he is notable for scoring 14 points in a winning game against the Brooklyn Nets with a score of 110-96. He also achieved his NBA career high rebounds of 16 in a losing game to the Dallas Mavericks with a score of 103-95 on January 25, 2017.

Apart from this, on March 25, 2017, Willy Hernangomez scored his NBA career high of 24 points with 13 rebounds in a losing game to the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 106-98. He was also declared to be the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month in April 2017 because of his scoring and rebounding abilities. He was also declared a member of the NBA All-Rookie First Team for his basketball abilities. He stayed with the team for the rest of the year until the New York Knicks traded him to the Charlotte Hornets on February 7, 2018.

Charlotte Hornets

Willy Hernangomez next found himself with the Charlotte Hornets in his NBA career. He was a member from 2018-2020. He impressed everyone with performance during the Summer League but saw much less time on the court throughout the season. He stayed with the team till 2020 when he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans on November 30, 2020.

New Orleans Pelicans

This was the third team for Willy Hernangomez in the NBA. He stayed there from 2020 to 2023. Despite this, he saw limited action on the court. He was at his best in the 2021-2022 season with the team. In June 2023, Willy Hernangomez became a free agent when the New Orleans Pelicans released him. This was also the end of his NBA journey for now.

FC Barcelona Bàsquet

After his NBA career, Willy Hernangomez has now signed a 3-year contract with FC Barcelona on July 12, 2023. He stated that his club Real Madrid did not agree to sign him but FC Barcelona welcomed him into their team. As per the contract, Willy Hernangomez will be with the team till June 30, 2026.

Spain National Basketball Team

Just like his younger brother, Willy Hernangomez also plays for team Spain on a national level. As a junior, he first participated in the 2011 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship in Poland, thereby winning a gold medal. In 2012, he competed in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament. Alongside the junior national team, he participated in the 2014 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship and won a silver medal.

Willy Hernangomez joined the senior national team at the 2015 EuroBasket in France, Winning a gold medal, 2017 EuroBasket in Turkey winning a bronze medal and the 2022 EuroBasket in Germany winning a gold medal.

He also competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and won a bronze medal.

Willy Hernangomez participated in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China and won a gold medal. Now, he will be on team Spain again for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
