"You're a real d**k" - When Lakers coach JJ Redick and D'Angelo Russell revisited their heated 2019 playoffs battle

JJ Redick and D'Angelo Russell spent time on the hardwood as Eastern conference rivals before. The newly minted LA Lakers coach played for the Philadelphia 76ers for two seasons, where he faced off Russell, the current Lakers PG, who will now play under Redick managing from the sidelines this season.

Russell and Redick had their on-court skirmishes when they faced off against each other. Ahead of their player-and-coach relationship and based on Redick's comments about talking the most to Russell ahead of the Lakers' 2024-25 NBA campaign, a video of the two from his 'The Old Man & the Three' podcast has resurfaced on social media.

The clip sees Russell and Redick talk about their trash-talk during a 76ers vs Nets game when Russell was defended by Redick but still made the shot and gestured a wave-off soon after. The sharpshooter added that he was livid with Russell and was looking for payback.

"You’re a real d**k, man. A real d**k," said Redick.

The Lakers are one of the most intriguing teams to watch out for this season. They are running it back with the same squad but have a new head coach in place — their third, after Frank Vogel and Darvin Ham in five seasons.

Redick was appointed as the 29th coach in Lakers history and has the responsibility to lead the Purple and Gold to a successful campaign after the team made the playoffs the last two seasons.

D'Angelo Russell, meanwhile, returned to his former franchise as a part of the three-team Russell Westbrook trade. Since his arrival, he has made a case for himself as the third scoring option for LA, behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

However, his playoff version has been a struggle — one Redick appears determined to sort out now that he's working with the guard.

JJ Redick says D'Angelo Russell will have a major role with the Lakers this season

In his press conference earlier this week, JJ Redick explained that D'Angelo Russell will have a major role with the Lakers this season. He added that one of his conversations with the PG was to put him in a position to have a "career year" this season.

The comments come amid the fact that the Lakers have actively involved Russell in their trade talks. Russell exercised his $18.7 million player option for the upcoming season and avoided free agency, but he is looked at as one of the primary assets the Lakers will deal with if they find the kind of player LA needs throughout the season.

D'Angelo Russell inked a two-year, $36 million contract with LA last offseason after his midseason trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged 18.0 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per contest, shooting 41.5 percent from the 3-point range last season.
