Young Guns – Making of the Revolution

Harish Sharma

What drives you from within to bring about a change that will lead to a revolution one day? Sometimes it’s the passion and love for something that brings out the best in you, and that’s the time you know you can make a difference.

Growing and popularizing any sport in a country like India, where cricket is supposedly a religion is very difficult and basketball is no exception. However, over the time the growth of the game has picked up pace with the support of organizations like IMG Reliance, which has minimized the obstruction of insufficient funds and infrastructure for the game of basketball. Consistent efforts in organizing national championships in the past decades, promoting international opportunities and the constant strife to upgrade the standard and quality of comforts for players have been recognized, amid the Asian basketball federations, although modestly in India. Apart from IMG Reliance partnership, Basketball Federation of India is also working with international masters of Basketball such as the “NBA“, University of Delaware, and George Mason University, to expand the horizon and widen the scope of sport in international markets. Basketball is a game that has grown gradually in our country, but now its time for this gradual growth to turn into a wild fire. We need to figure out what are the right steps that we can take in order to facilitate the growth of this game in India. The commitments and participations of international bodies in our country have given us the confidence to step forward and do what we love to do the most.

Harish Sharma

Harish Sharma’s efforts being in the BFI has completely given a new approach to the game of basketball in India. With his help the Indian team have started getting more exposure on the international front, which helps the players to improve their competitive skills. Along with the players now even the veterans of the game are given an opportunity to take active involvement in the game by being the guiding sources for the new players.

Along with the support from the organizations mentioned above there have been dedicated efforts by the people who have been working hard for the game to grow in India. One such name is Yuvika Sharma, being born to the popular passionate cager Harish Sharma, Yuvika has been involved with the sport of basketball since early days of her life. Although a national level player herself, Yuvika was always more captivated with growth of the game by organizing and facilitating events. Therefore she has involved herself with the Basketball Federation of India to best utilize the management skills that she acquired through a sports management course from the University of Delaware.

Also joining hands in this journey is Anup Rajrukar who has been playing a key role in developing the game of basketball. This very year nagpur saw its first Franchise league for sub junior boys and girls which marked history by being one of its kind in any sport. Following the footsteps of Harish Sharma he regularly organizes short duration coaching camps where he gives platform for the former Indian team players to share their knowledge and experience with the new players.

So, now that the resources are being taken care of, it’s the perfect time for the youngsters to come together and make a difference. It is always important to remember that with your contribution and efforts together, the rapid growth of the game can be transformed into a revolution. Time has come now instead of complaining about the things that we don’t get, its time to appreciate the support we are getting and give our 100% in improving the potential of Indian Basketball.
