He was born on May 14, 2002, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to parents, Julia and Glen Edey. He earned many accolades in college including the National College Player of the Year, the Pete Newell Big Man Award, the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, all of them in 2023 and 2024, and the Lute Olson Award in 2024. Edey is the tallest player in Big Ten history, standing 7 feet 4 inches tall. Additionally, he was honored with the Consensus first-team All-American and First-team All-Big Ten, both in 2023 and 2024.

Cheyne decided to attend college at Purdue University and was later drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
