34th National Games : Day 2 boxing

Keenan Stadium at Jamshedpur played host to another action-packed day of the boxing competition at the 34^th National Games on Sunday, February 20, 2011. A high voltage drama unfolded as the men and women boxers took on their respective opponents in aggressive bouts.

Amongst the many interesting fights that took place in the men’s section, Manpreet Singh of SSCB took on Rambol of Madhya Pradesh in the heavy weight category. A silver medalist at the 2010 Asian Games, Manpreet lived up to his reputation defeating Rambol on points 5:1.

Balwinder Beniwal of Haryana though failed to meet expectations and went down against Rakesh Kalaskar of SSCB without much resistance in the light welter weight category, causing an upset. Kalaskar won on points 6:0 in a one sided affair.

An upset in the women’s section came in the form of former national champion Chhoto Loura, representing Haryana, going down against last year’s National Championships runners up Monica Saun of Punjab. After a defensive display by both the players in the initial rounds, a veteran in the game, Loura could not stand up to the grit exhibited by Saun in the third round and failed to make it to the next stage of the 60 Kg category losing 2:4.

Every fight though was not meant to be a display of tough opposition. The referees had a rather busy day intervening in a total of 6 bouts, inclusive of both men and women categories.

With day two offering intense competition, the level of contention is only expected to rise as the tournament proceeds to day three. “The field is tough and level of competition is praise worthy, it is not easy to predict a winner yet. The games are just what we expected, the officials too are doing a great job”, admits national coach GS Sandhu.
