AIBA president says 'Boxing Olympic Gold medal possible for India'

Ching-Kuo Wu – AIBA President

Ching-Kuo Wu, the president of Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA), believes that India has a good chance of clinching a gold medal in women’s boxing in London 2012 Olympic Games from MC Mary Kom, the five-time world champion. The women’s boxing will make it’s debut in Olympics in 2012.

“India has very good boxers with record. I am sure we would have good boxers representing India. The five time world championship winner Mary Kom is a legend and everybody is saying she has a very good chance of winning at the Olympics” said Wu.

MC Mary Km has won 17 gold medals in international participations with 2 silver medals, the highest and only of its kind achievement for any women boxer across the world.

AIBA’s controversial decision:

The organization has won a long battle to get women’s boxing into the Olympics but now they are facing some criticism over the enforcement of the dress code for boxers. The AIBA’s Women’s Commission made recommendations on the clothing changes for the sake of the spectators stating the reason that people can’t differentiate the men and the women boxers on TV as they wear the same uniforms and headgear although Wu claims that tickets for the women’s boxing matches in London Olympics have already been sold out.

Wu also said that the AIBA will move from current semi-professional category to professional category in 2013 to create maximum career opportunities for the boxers.
