Indian boxers sizzle in quarterfinals on day two

It was a fruitful day for Indian boxers at the quarter finals of the fifth Commonwealth Boxing Championship 2010 being held at the world class state of the art Talkatora boxing stadium. Olympic silver medallist Vijender Singh along with team mates Suranjoy Singh and Dinesh Kumar moved ahead to the semi-finals. The championship which is also being treated as a test event by the Organising Committee Commonwealth games Delhi 2010 enroute to the games in October 2010has over 100 boxers participating from 14 countries. The championship is supposed to culminate on the 17th of March 2010.

It was Suranjoy Singh in the fly 52 kg category who opened the day for India with a win against Kenyan boxer Benson Gicharu. The bout which was thoroughly dominated by Suranjoy ended with a final score of 14:2. “I felt my body was stiff today. Though I won the bout, I feel I need to work on my stiffness before I enter the ring again in the semi-finals.” said Suranjoy Singh after the bout.

The second Indian bout of the day was in the Welter 69 kg category, where Indian boxer Dilbagh Singh went down to Callum Smith of England. The third Indian bout was one of the most awaited matches of the day. Olympic Gold Medallist Vijender Singh in the middle 75 kg category fought against Malaysian boxer Mohd. Haron. Vijender began on an attacking note leaving Haron without any answers to counter Vijender’s punches. Vijender won the bout after the referee stopped the contest in the second round.

“I feel very confident after this win. It feels like I am a step closer to my Gold Medal after a very long time. I just wish my performance improves in the next round and I end the championship on a winning note,” Said an elated Vijender Singh after his win.

The final Indian bout of the day was in the Light Heavy 81 Kg category, where Indian boxer Dinesh kumar defeated Reece papuni from New Zealand after the referee stopped contest in the final round.

In the quarter finals tomorrow Akhil Kumar, Amandeep, Jai Bhagwan and Manpreet Singh would fight for the semi-final berth.
