Manpreet Singh through to the third round of World Boxing Championhips

Asian Games silver medalist Manpreet Singh (91kg) defeated Agnes Keddy of Seychelles 3-0 in the second round of the World Boxing Championships.

Manpreet Singh, who got bye in the opening round completely out-punched his rival to make it to the last 16 in the Heavyweight category. The individual scoreline read 30-27 30-27 30-27 in favor of the Indian boxer.

This was the fourth successive win for the Indian boxers, before this three Indian boxers (Vikash Malik, Mandeep Jangra and Vijender Singh) have already cleared their first-round hurdle. With this win, Manpreet Singh became the first Indian boxer in this year’s championships to make it to the third round.

Manpreet had a very tough task ahead in the next round as he will take on the London Olympics Bronze medalist and current World No. 1 Teymur Mammadov of Azerbaijan in the pre-quarterfinals. Mammadov, who won the silver medal in the last edition of the World Championhips defeated Efetobor Apochi of Nigeria 3-0 in the second round. This bout will take place on Monday.

In the evening session Olympic Quarterfinalist Manoj Kumar (64kg) will be up against Faith Keles of Turkey in the second round. Manoj Kumar, who got bye in his opening bout is the sixth seeded boxer in the 64kg wt. category.

As Indian Boxing Federation is currently suspended by International Boxing Association’s (AIBA), Indian pugilists are competing as independent boxers under the banner of AIBA which directly means that if any Indian boxer wins the Gold medal at the Championships, then neither the tri-colour will be raised nor the national anthem will be played.
