Vijender Singh – a name that needs no introduction. He has been the man responsible for reviving boxing in India. This Olympic bronze medal winner will again lead the largest Indian boxing contingent to London.
Here’s what he said when Sportskeeda spoke to him.
Q. This time the Indian Boxing contingent is going to be the largest for the Olympics. How do you feel about it?
- Amazing, it feels amazing to see so many of us qualifying for the Olympics. This proves that India has immense potential in boxing. Olympic is the biggest stage for any sportsperson and I feel privileged to be participating again and this time with a bigger team.
Q. What is your training schedule like?
- We all are going through rigorous training sessions right now. We are currently training in Patiala, where the temperature goes past 40 degrees, so we have restricted our training to just 6 to 7 hours a day. But we are covering every aspect of the game whether physical, mental or technical. We are following very strict schedules and healthy diets so that we can be absolutely ready for the upcoming London Games.
Q.Will we see a podium finish from you again this year?
- I am working really hard for that. In fact, everyone in the team is working hard. I am sure this time again I’ll get a medal and make India proud. This time I am hoping that not only me but my other teammates will also win medals for India.
Q. Are you supported by any corporate?
- No, not as of now. I am being supported by the Government and SAI and I am happy with it. In future if I get a chance or any offer, I’ll surely consider it but till then I am satisfied with the kind of support that I have.
Q.Which tournaments prior to Olympics will you be participating in?
- We have quite a few tournaments lined up as of now. I’ll be participating in each and every tournament whether it’s in India or abroad. I would be travelling to UK and the Gulf countries to participate in couple of tournaments and for training before going into the Olympics.
Q. How do you relax on an off day?
- Sleep! That’s the best way to relax. I usually get dead tired working out the whole week and my body needs rest to recuperate from the hard work that I put in. Therefore on an off day, I make sure I get enough rest to recharge my mind and body.
