Vijender Singh had an estimated television audience of 20 million people in India watching his professional debut on October 10th, not to mention his fans in the UK and elsewhere around the globe. But what most people don’t know is that a Hollywood movie executive was watching it too, reports NDTV.
In a statement released by Vijender’s promoters in India, IOS, the executive, who preferred to remain unnamed, said, “I'm very excited by Vijender and his potential and we're looking forward to seeing him up close on Saturday night and taking it from there. I've only seen his first fight and being a boxing fan, that was something special and some of my close associates also mentioned it.”
He also added, “He's got a special commanding presence and aura about him in the ring, likes he's the king of the ring, and I think that it could transfer onto screen, who knows, we just want to see him on Saturday first and we're hoping for another exciting performance.”
India’s first Olympic boxing medallist has already made his bones in the movies, starring in the 2014 Bollywood flick “Fugly” as well as making appearances in the reality show MTV Hero Roadies X2. Perhaps the ace pugilist will get two birds with one stone by making it in Hollywood as well as becoming India’s first professional boxing world titlist.
In another release, IOS stated that the Haryana lad will return to India in “some form of title bout”, for which the potential venue will be the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. A date has not been finalized, according to Times of India.
Francis Warren of Vijender’s managers Queensberry Promotions, said, “ At the moment, most of Vijender’s learning and development are taking place in the gym. But by his fifth or sixth fight, we'll be looking to put him on in some form of title fight - perhaps WBO Asian - before 20,000 in Delhi. We're confident he'd draw 12,000, if we put him on there now in a four-rounder.”
Francis, the son of Frank Warren, the owner of Queensberry Promotions also mentioned a possible run for the Commonwealth title. Vijender will take on Nottinghamshire firefighter Dean Gillen on Saturday, the 7th of November. The event will be broadcast on Sony Six at 11:00 PM.
