Olympic and World Championships Bronze medalist Vijender Singh (75kg) will face Hampus Henriksson of Sweden in the first round of the World Boxing Championships tomorrow. Match is scheduled to start at 2:45 P.M (IST). Unfortunately there is no live telecast of the championships.
Vijender, who lost in the quarterfinals at the London Olympics will be making his fourth successive appearance at the mega event. This is Vijender’s first major tournament after being accused in the controversial drug scandal earlier this year.
If Vijender wins his first bout then he could well face the 5th seed and current World No. 7 Jason Quigley of Ireland in the next round. Vijender won the bronze medal in the 2009 edition of this event.
In the 69kg wt. category India’s Mandeep Jangra made it to the round of 32 after crushing Tanzania’s Selemani Kidunda 3-0 in the first round bout. Mandeep will next take on Serdar Hudayberdiyev of Turkmenistan on October 20.
As Indian Boxing Federation is suspended by International Boxing Association’s (AIBA), Indian pugilists will compete as independent boxers under the banner of AIBA which directly means that if any Indian boxer wins the Gold medal at the Championships, then neither the tri-colour will be raised nor the national anthem will be played.
A total of 576 boxers from 116 countries are participating in the 17th edition of these Championships in which the new rules have been implemented. As per the new rules the fighters will be in the boxing ring without any head-guards.Another new feature will be the new 10-point must scoring system.
