The Punjabi drums that heralded Vijender Singh’s entry to the ring in the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland weren’t the only things that were beating tonight. Vijender’s hands did some too, as did Dean Gillen’s heart, quicker than normal, as he faced the Indian’s onslaught.
The Haryana pugilist, only one fight old, was expeditious in his effort, taking out the slightly more experienced Gillen in just under one round.
The fight commenced with a brief feeling out process, and Gillen quickly turned the aggressor, no doubt trying to capitalise on the defensive gaps that were evident in Vijender’s debut. But the Olympic bronze medallist lunged in and out of the Nottinghamshire firefighter’s range, expertly picking his shots.
A few body shots preceded a cannonball-like straight right hand that caught Gillen off-guard and sent him to the floor in the 3rd minute. Gillen stood up before the referee raised all ten of his fingers, but wouldn’t be on his feet for long.
Vijender picked up right where he left off, pressuring Gillen with seconds to go in the round. Just when it seemed that Gillen would be saved by the bell, Vijender turned up the heat and landed a few body shots and a right hook to the temple that sent Gillen to the floor again. The referee wouldn‘t be interrupted in his count this time, and Vijender’s hand was raised.
Official result: Vijender Singh defeats Dean Gillen via Technical Knockout in the first round. His professional record now reads 2-0.
