The face if Indian boxing, Vijender Singh, is straining at the leash ahead of his second professional boxing bout, which will take place in London on the 30th of October. The 2008 Olympic medallist told fans to expect another explosive performance from him in the Harrow Leisure Centre, according to the Indian Express.
Vijender Singh looked sublime in his debut in Manchester on October 10th against local fighter Sonny Whiting. The Haryana boxer stayed aggressive and didn’t look at all perturbed by the pageantry as he masterfully dispatched Whiting wiSth a vicious comination that ended the fight in the third round.
The 2010 Asian Games gold medallist had the following to say about his upcoming fight: “I’m thrilled to be fighting in London as a professional for the first time and I can’t wait to meet with my fans in the south and give them some big-fight action. Winning on last Saturday was a very big moment for me, I had my whole country watching me on TV, even though they weren’t there it felt like they were and I knew that I had to give them something special and I did.”
The support has been overwhelming, from fans in India and the UK, according to Vijender: “I’ve been overwhelmed with messages from fans congratulating me on the win…London is probably the most ‘happening’ place in the world, there is a big buzz and magnetism in the city with sport and entertainment, the history and culture, so I can’t wait to bring more excitement when I fight there. I have fantastic memories of when I boxed in London at the Olympics representing India as the captain of the boxing team and it was an amazing spectacle and occasion.”
Vijender is on a mission to become India’s first professional boxing champion. His next opponent has not yet been announced. His success could pave the way for other talented boxers from India to enter the world of professional boxing and make India a force to reckon with on the global stage.
