Vijender Singh’s much-anticipated bout at home for the WBO Asia title has been postponed. The fight which was supposed to take place on June 11 has been postponed for a month to July. Vijender Singh beat Andrzej Soldra last night to register his sixth victory out of six fights via a technical knockout. The event was postponed due to certain logistical reasons.
Upon hearing this news, Vijender insisted he still won’t take a break as it will upset his rhythm.
Speaking to PTI in a telephonic chat from Manchester he said, "I am really looking forward to the India bout, it is going to be a huge moment for me to step inside the ring in front of my home fans. And that is why I am not going to take any break from training because I want to be at my best. It is technically not good either to take a break as the body has to remain in rhythm."
Vijender looks super focused for his maiden title bout as he continued, "Even while I am in India, there won't be a proper break, I would be training daily because I cannot be completely away from training. I would be celebrating my wedding anniversary on May 17 there before I come back to Manchester to continue my preparation for the India bout."
Talking about his fight and subsequent victory over Soldra, the 30-year-old went on to say that the Polish pugilist was tougher to fight against but he always believed in himself and knew if he could connect one or two, he would go on to win.
"He connected better, certainly, but I relied on power. I was looking for that one powerful blow which would knock him off. I managed to strike that in the third round when he lost his balance.”
When asked about his combination and use of his powerful right jabs that have been pivotal in his success so far, he said he doesn't use it early, instead relying upon it after softening up the opponent for the final assault.
The opponent for his title bout in July is yet to be decided but Vijender has already invited bigwigs such as Sachin Tendulkar, Delhi chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi for the clash.
The boxer from Haryana first gained prominence when he won the first ever Olympic medal for an Indian boxer- a bronze at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
