The World Youth Boxing Championship at Baku, Azerbaijan saw India winning two medals. Vikas Krishnan clinched gold medal after winning a tough fight against Evalados Petrauskas of Lithuania in the lightweight (60 kg) category. Apart from Krishnan, Shiva Thapa grabbed the silver medal in the 54 kg category. Shiva who was first to enter the boxing ring after grabbing four lopsided wins in he championship was defeated by 1-14 by the Cuban player Robeisy Eloy Ramirezz Carrizone.
The Haryana boxer Vikas Krishnan who won the Asian Youth championship last month in Iran played strategically and leveled the first round at 1-1 and moved ahead in the second round with 3-2 scoreline. Vikas played defensively in the first round but hit strong punches in the second round. The third round scoreline read as 1-1. Krishnan won the match after he used a powerful right uppercut, which he followed with a left hook. This strategy worked and Lithuanian Petrauskas was defeated by Krishnan by 4-3.
In the another match between Thapa and Carrizone, Thapa who has sustained an injury in the right hand was put at back foot by Carrizone as the Cuban took lead in the match by 4-0. Thapa who scored his only point in the second round was beaten by huge margin of 8-1 by Carrizone. Thapa never looked comfortable in the match and was thus defeated.
Vikas and Thapa have qualified for the Youth Olympics going to be held in August this year in Singapore.
