Indian boxers continued to pack a mighty punch at the world boxing championships as another Indian boxer made his way to the pre-quarterfinals of the Championships.
This time it was the turn of the 22 year old boxer from Manipur, Thokchom Nanao Singh. Nanao Singh, who is the former Youth World Amateur Boxing Championships gold medalist defeated Aqeel Ahmed of Scotland 3-0 in the second round of the Championships.
The individual scoreline read 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 in favor of the Indian boxer. Nanao had a tough task ahead in the next round as he will take on the 8th seeded Anthony Rivera Chacon of Puerto Rico for the place in the quarters.
With this win Thokchom becmae the third Indian boxer to enter the pre-quarters of the Championships. Before this Manoj Kumar (64kg) and Manpreet Singh (91kg) have already booked their place in the last 16. Apart from this 3 Indian Boxers (Vikash Malik, Mandeep Jangra and Vijender Singh) have already cleared their first-round hurdle.
Vijender Singh (75kg) and Shiva Thapa (56kg) will also be in action this afternoon. Former Olympic and World Championships Bronze medalist Vijender will take on the World No. 7 and current European Champion Jason Quigley of Ireland whereas 4th seeded Shiva Thapa will fight it out with Mario Fernandez of Philippines in the second round.
National champion Satish Kumar (+91kg) will be up against Tajikistan’s Mirodzhidin Karimov in the first round.
Due to the provisional suspension imposed on the Indian Boxing Federation, the country’s pugilists are competing in the Championships under the banner of International Boxing Association (AIBA).
