Youth World Boxing Championships see record number of participants

Sofia (Bulgaria), April 25 (IANS): A record 606 athletes from 105 countries and regions competed on the first day of the Youth World Boxing Championships here, with the Americans emerging as the big winners.

Eight teams won gold medals on Thursday while Shakur Stevenson, Daramni Rock and Jajaira Gonzales pocketed three of them for the United States in the men’s 52 kg, +91 kg and women’s 60 kg categories, respectively.

Shalkar Aikhynbay and Ablaikhan Zhussupov brought two gold medals to Kazakhstan in the men’s 49 kg and 60 kg.

Javier Ibanez and Yordan Hernandez of Cuba won the golds in men’s 56 kg and 91 kg while Bibert Tumenov and Dmitrii Nesterov of Russia won the men’s 64 kg and 75 kg.

Bektemir Melikuziev of Uzbekistan and Blagoy Naydenov of Bulgaria won the titles in men’s 69 kg and 81 kg while Anush Grigoryan of Armenia and Elzbieta Wojcik grabbed the golds in women’s 51 kg and 75 kg.
