Activision's Cease and Desist letter to take down Mod H2M was to protect Black Ops 6 sales
Trusted insider @BobNetworkUK_ claimed on X that sources from Activision confirmed to him that Mod H2M was removed to save Black Ops 6 sales from getting affected as Activision's team was reportedly afraid of the mod's success in case of its public release.
Per the scooper, it could be the real reason why Mod H2M was taken down just a day before its anticipated launch on August 16, 2024. It was supposed to enable players to revisit OG Modern Warfare 2's Multiplayer by purchasing Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered. The latter would have used the mod to let players experience MW2's Multiplayer format with enhanced visuals.
However, this dream didn't turn into a reality as Activision ordered the creators of Mod H2M to remove it permanently before it went live. Following its removal, players took to Steam to share negative reviews for Modern Warfare Remastered, since they had purchased it just to revisit MW2's Multiplayer via the mod.
Speaking of Black Ops 6 - the next big Call of Duty premium title from Treyarch will be released on October 25, 2024. Going by the leak, it seems like Activision believed that more CoD players would buy Modern Warfare Remastered over Black Ops 6 after getting Mod H2M to dive into the Multiplayer experience of 2009's MW2.
However, there has been no official update from Activision on its decision to take down the mod.
Mod H2M's removal leaves the CoD community disappointed
Activision's decision to take down the awaited mod has led to fans expressing strong criticism against the publisher. Many players have shared extreme disappointment over the company sending a Cease and Desist letter to Mod H2M's creators to remove it.
A lot of them have also review-bombed Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam to express their angst. Many have even begun to request a refund.
