An upcoming Call of Duty update for the CoD HQ app is set to reduce massive download sizes for Modern Warfare 3 and future CoD entries. The Season 5 Reloaded update – releasing on August 21, 2024 — will finally address a major issue that has been prevalent since the introduction of CoD HQ, which generally requires a lot of memory space on devices and installs files demanding hundreds of gigabytes.
But now, the franchise is finally doing away with massive download sizes with the Season 5 Reloaded update. The latter is set to begin a new trend of reduced download sizes for existing as well as future releases for CoD HQ.
Call of Duty to reorganize download sizes of games on CoD HQ app ahead of Black Ops 6 launch
The Season 5 Reloaded update will arrive in a huge file, with the intention of gradually reducing the download size, thanks to Call of Duty's new optimization tech. This new update will reorganize the game files while separating Warzone from the annual titles.
"Paving the way for these benefits requires a large initial update set to release alongside the launch of Season 5 Reloaded on August 21, introducing: Game file reorganization. Separating Call of Duty: Warzone from the default download for annual titles. Implementing new texture streaming tech."
Simply put, players can now decide which game files they want to download without having to install Warzone as a necessary addition. They will be able to download Warzone Battle Royale separately going forward without having its files merged with any existing Call of Duty premium title inside the CoD HQ app.

To reduce download sizes for Call of Duty games on CoD HQ, texture streaming usage will also expand. While the Season 5 Reloaded update will mark a big file, its stated size won't translate into the storage space on players' devices.
Here's what the official blog has revealed on massive download sizes after installing Season 5 Reloaded update:
"This initial download will not permanently add the stated file size to the storage space that Call of Duty takes up on your device. The update is reorganizing game files and adding new tech to prep the way for the full player interface arriving in October. Once complete, Call of Duty's footprint will decrease due to these file optimizations."
Thanks to the new optimization tech, the Season 5 Reloaded update for Modern Warfare 3 will reorganize game files to facilitate CoD HQ's new UI overhaul ahead of Black Ops 6's release on October 25, 2024.
After installing the update, players will only receive smaller download sizes for CoD games and existing files will take less memory space.
Black Ops 6 will have a smaller download size at launch than Modern Warfare 3
Yes, Call of Duty has officially confirmed that Black Ops 6's download size at launch will be smaller on CoD HQ than Modern Warfare 3 last year:
"Following these updates and optimizations, future Call of Duty download sizes will decrease. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be a smaller download than Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® III at launch."

This becomes possible thanks to the new optimization technology for CoD HQ and all future games. As for the actual download size for Black Ops 6 on launch, it's yet to be revealed since the developing team is still in the final stage of optimization. Details on download size and final specs for the next Call of Duty will be confirmed in October 2024.
