Operation 40 is the first campaign mission of the Black Ops that began in 1961. It all started in Santa Maria, when Cuba as Alex Mason, Woods, and Bowman tried to assassinate Fidel Castro, one of the antagonists of Black Ops. However, it was later found that their target was a body double.

Unfortunately, when Alex Mason tried to escape from the area he was captured and delivered to Soviet General Nikita Dragovich, and Colonel Lev Kravchenko, the two main antagonists of Black Ops. They imprisoned Mason in Vorkuta, a Russian gulag, where he met Viktor Reznov, another interesting character of the series.

While Mason was imprisoned, a German scientist Friedrich Steiner got an order from Dragovich to initiate a brainwashing technique on Mason via the Number Program. The goal was to turn Mason into a sleeper agent, who, after receiving a number code, would awaken and accomplish the mission to assassinate President John F. Kennedy.

However, Reznov had his rivalry with Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steine, so he got their plan. He then brainwashed Mason and ordered him to eliminate the trio.
