The new Perk system in Black Ops 6 has been stirring up a few debates online. Many players are of the opinion that it enhances the gameplay experience and brings in more variety. However, several others think that the system limits their ability to enjoy the game on their terms. This debate isn't new in the community and has been a matter of discussion since the game's beta, which took place in September 2024.

Recently, Reddit user u/TraumaTracer took to the platform to share their thoughts on the Perk system in Black Ops 6:

"All of these Perks sharing the same slot is one of the biggest problems with the game".

In the post, they shared a screenshot of multiple Perks in Slot 1, which showcased Perks like Ghost, Ninja, Flak Jacket, and Tac Mask. They believe coupling all these in the same slot ruins versatility, limiting options for players as to how they want to play the game. For those unaware, all the Perks shown in the image can be game-changing.

The Tac Mask Perk, for instance, reduces the incoming effects of all enemy tactical equipment such as Concussion Grenades or Flashbangs. Similarly, the Flak Jacket reduces incoming damage from enemy lethal explosives, allowing players to take more risk and survive longer on the objective site.

But with these two Perks present in one slot, players can pick only one of the two. This limits their options and this theme can be seen repeated by fans who despise the new Perk system in Black Ops 6.

u/Nerveex on Reddit commented on the post sharing their thoughts on the game's Perk system:

"You don’t like the most useful Perks to all share the same slot meanwhile the other two perks slots just seem to be filler".

According to them, the most useful Perks in Black Ops 6 have been merged under a single slot, i.e., Slot 1. The other two slots for Perks according to them act as a "filler" instead and have no real purpose since the important Perks are only there for the first slot.

This theme of the second and third slots being not useful enough remains. Another user u/excaliburps had to say the following about the Perk system in Black Ops 6:

"Slot 2 is the most useless one. Like, I don’t get their logic in having one filler slot. Why bother with it at all? Just forcing people to pick a perk that severely limits their play style, is bad game design. So wish Pick 10 was back".

Right out of the bat, they claimed that the second slot was the "most useless" Perk slot in the game. According to them, the filler slot does not improve gameplay and limits the player's ability to enjoy the game on their terms. Finally, they added that they wish for the return of the Pick 10 system, which was present in Black Ops 2 — it gave players a lot of customizability for their loadouts, be it Perks or weapons.

Soon, many fans joined the conversion with nothing but praises for the classic Pick 10 system in Black Ops 2.

All of these comments made it seem like the Pick 10 system was one of the best features ever in a Call of Duty game. These praises were directed at both Ghosts and Black Ops 2.

For those new to the series, Ghosts also had a Pick 10-like system for the loadouts, which operated based on a currency. It allowed players to pick up to ten items in their loadouts, including Perks and attachments for their guns. They could pick any item to their loadout as long as they were below ten items.

For instance, one could just pick six Perks in the game with a knife only, as stated by u/SlitherSlow in their comment.

Although most of these comments despised the updated system and wanted to go back to the Pick 10 system, many came out in support of the Perk system in Black Ops 6.

Reddit user u/Monkiller587 had to say the following about the updated system in the game:

"It’s on purpose lol. That prevents people from equipping all the op or useful perks at the same time and create a balance."

They mentioned that the developers did it intentionally as it prevents players from using all the important Perks at the same time, thus creating balance.

If one could use all the important Perks such as Tac Mask, Flak Jacket, Ghost, or Ninja, at the same time, it would've made them overpowered. So, these changes were made to create a balanced experience.

Another fan, who goes by the username u/Tyrant_Virus_, talked about how the new Perk system is essential for a varied gameplay experience. Here is what they had to say about the new system:

"Having one slot hold multiple must pick perks leads to variety of play and not everyone running the exact same set up because you are forced to make a choice".

They mentioned that having one Perk slot with multiple important Perks makes users decide carefully what goes in their loadout. This is essential as it prevents matches from becoming stale. If there was an option to use all the important Perks in all three slots, it would've led everyone to use the best combination.

As a result, most players would be equipped with the same Perks setup, and all their matches would have eventually become repetitive and stale, with barely any variety.

With things as is, the game asks players to choose between the Perks they want, keeping things interesting and ever-so-changing.

New Perk system in Black Ops 6 sparks debate online

The Perk system in Black Ops 6 has sparked quite a few debates. The context for these debates is that fans feel that Perk Slot 1 consists of the most important Perks in the game and Slots 2 and 3, don't bring anything valuable to the table. As a result, it prevents users from playing the game on their terms and the other two slots merely act as fillers.

However, others believe that this is a good design choice as makes players pick between some of the best Perks instead of using them all at once. This keeps the player from becoming overpowered and maintains a balanced playing field for all, ensuring that Black Ops 6 doesn't become stale down the line.
