Black Ops Cold War has multiple endings depending on the player's choices. In the Lie ending, Bell chooses to betray the CIA and leads them to Duga instead of Solvetsky. Adler, accompanied by Mason, Park, and Woods, faced an ambush from Perseus and his troops, ultimately leading to their demise at the hands of Bell.

In a different outcome, Bell guides Adler and their comrades to Duga, where he ultimately kills Bell and departs, leaving the body. In another ending, Adler betrays Bell, resulting in the latter's demise. Adler drew his gun and fired first, ending the scene with a cliffhanger, enabling chances of his survival.

Call of Duty accidentally uploaded an image for the Call of Duty Black Ops 6 reveal trailer, which was quickly removed from the official website. The image featured a person wearing sunglasses and a black trenchcoat, who is believed to be none other than Russell Adler. This confirms the suspicion that he survived in Black Ops Cold War.

During the events of the 1984 storyline, Adler was captured and subjected to experiments by Vikhor "Stitch" Kuzmin, the ruthless head of the Nova 6 facility on Rebirth Island. Stitch manipulated Adler into betraying his team during a mission, but he was ultimately rescued by his comrades. Adler then confronted Stitch on Verdansk, eliminating him in the end.

All the aforementioned events translate to Adler surviving the events of Black Ops Cold War. This increases his chances of appearing in a future Black Ops title.
