The tug-of-war between fans of Blackout and Warzone for the best battle royale game in Call of Duty's history continues. While Warzone popularized the concept of battle royale among Call of Duty fans and is still going strong today, Blackout introduced the mode to the series. It was released as a separate game mode for Black Ops 4 and was popular during its helm. Despite fans loving the mode, it soon dropped in popularity as players switched to other BR offerings at the time.
However, there has always been a debate in the community regarding the better battle royale title. Recently, @CallofDutyComms on X posted a question that asked their community the following,
"Is Blackout a Better Battle Royale than Warzone?"
Others joined this discussion and shared their opinions on which is the better game mode. Off the bat, the comment section of the post had made it clear that most of them swayed towards Blackout being the better BR game over Warzone.
An X user named @its_TBD1 had to say the following:
"In EVERY way Blackout was better. Everyone running different guns. No smoke cheese. No, redeploy tokens. People playing for their life. Amour was punishable Level 3 made you move slower but protected you from getting domed. Camo's were crazy good. The skill gap was perfect."
According to them, Blackout was the better battle royale experience in every way. They claim that everyone in the original BR shooter used different guns, which in Warzone is far from reality as metas exist, and those are often the weapons that players use, leading to a stale game.
Furthermore, redeployment wasn't as common back in the day, which led to a true battle royale experience, unlike WZ, where players can be respawned several times throughout the match. They also added that the skill gap in the title was just perfect, which has been a major cause of concern since its launch due to its implementation of skill-based matchmaking in WZ.
As mentioned, Black Ops 4's BR mode quickly rose and fell. Some attribute this to the game's price. Since it wasn't a standalone game like Warzone, players had to pay for the game to play it. As a result, many who wanted to play the game didn't even try it out, leading to its fall over time. This thought was summed up well in a comment by @KeithWr01929217.
Others talked about the mode's barebones and simple experience which does not handhold players. According to them, Warzone tries to do much too out of the box, and as a result, it can become overwhelming for the player, causing them to tire themselves after a few games.
Another user, @IsaacMorrison38 on X highlights why BO was the better title. They mentioned:
"While I love the depth of Warzone and modes like Plunder, Blackout was exactly what comes to mind when I think COD meets BR. Plus it didn't have nearly as many glitches and cheaters."
According to them, Warzone has much more depth compared to the original battle royale, and with modes like Plunder, the game can be way more accessible and a lot more fun. For them, however, when it comes to a Call of Duty battle royale title, Blackout is what comes to mind. They claim that WZ is mostly ruined by cheaters and glitches, which wasn't the case with BO4's battle royale.
The support for Blackout in the post was overwhelmingly positive throughout the X post. But that doesn't mean WZ didn't get any love from fans.
@NomadMajor on X had to say the following about the current Call of Duty battle royale:
"No Warzone is 100% better that's why more people play, especially when it had DMZ mode".
According to them, there is no doubt that WZ is the ultimate COD BR game and is still going strong four years after its launch. However, they do claim that it was much more fun during the MW2 DMZ days back in late 2022 and early 2023, which, unfortunately, doesn't receive content updates anymore.
Another user, @WildRam85, praised the two particular Warzone maps and stated why WZ was the better battle royale. Here's what they had to say:
"Verdansk and Urzikistan 1000% better."
They mention that the original WZ map Verdansk, and the latest map Urzikstan are far better than the one featured in Blackout.
@CB416TO was also in favor of the latest BR game, saying:
"Not even a little bit. But was a good start. BR isn’t really a thing anymore with WZ. It’s a Resurgence big map and small maps essentially."
According to them, Warzone is clearly the better game. However, they did call Blackout a good start for the genre. However, they added that battle royale in its true essence isn't really in the current WZ and it feels more like a Resurgence mode that is being played on all the big and small maps due to the multiple respawns.

Fans weigh in on Blackout and Warzone to decide which is the better Call of Duty battle royale
CoD fans on X battled it out over which is the better Call of Duty battle royale title among Blackout and Warzone. Both sides of the debate shared their opinions and defended the game. However, most comments in the post seemed to sway towards Blackout, deeming it to be the better BR game in the series' history.
That said, however, this didn't mean that support for WZ was lacking in any way. Fans defended the game without any compromises, leading to an informative debate that highlighted the pros and cons of both battle royale experiences.
