MW3 Zombies reportedly had a DMZ-inspired mode in the making
MargwaNetwork, a reputed Call of Duty informer, posted that MW3 Zombies had a PvPvE mode like DMZ in the works, which was later removed from the game. For those unaware of these terminologies, simply put, a PvPvE game mode is where players not only compete against other players but also against several AI characters, which in the case of MWZ, are zombies and Mercenaries.
This mode would have been quite similar to Modern Warfare 2's (2022) DMZ, which featured these exact mechanics. In DMZ, players were not only competing against other players for resources but also against AI enemies and engaged in boss fights. If you look closely at how MW3 Zombies currently stands, it shares a lot of similarities with DMZ, except for the PvP aspect.
In MWZ, players are also collecting resources, engaging in boss fights, and eliminating zombies and Mercenaries. The only way it differs from the DMZ blueprint is that in this mode, players don't compete with other players. Otherwise, the basics of both the modes are same. In fact, both are extraction-based modes.
As reported, the game mode that would have been in MW3 Zombies would have been an exact DMZ replica, except in this case, they will fight zombies instead of human enemies.

This DMZ-like mode also reportedly had contracts that players had to complete, including the likes of Bounty Contracts, where players had to track down enemies to eliminate them for additional XP and in-game cash.
While this sounds exciting and might feel like a ripoff, fans are glad that the mode never made it to the final game.
The community is quick to catch on to the latest news and they were happy that the DMZ-like mode never happened. According to fans, a Zombies mode should never be PvP.
A Zombies mode, since its inception, has been always about PvE experience. Call of Duty follows a triple threat formula (with few exceptions), featuring three modes - a single-player story-driven Campaign mode, a PVP Multiplayer mode, and a Co-Op PvE mode like Zombies, which allows players to team up with others and fight against AI enemies.
With a DMZ-like mode in MW3 Zombies, this third and crucial experience would've completely been eliminated from the entire triple threat package, leaving fans with a less-than-stellar experience.
So, although fans missed out on a unique mode, Sledgehammer Games probably made the right decision in this regard. This is well reflected in the reception of the mode, with many Call of Duty fans claiming that MW3 Zombies is the best and the most beloved offering in the entire Modern Warfare 3 package.
